How Many Days Can a Security Camera Record on a microSD Card?
There is no single “128GB equals this many days” answer for every security camera. The useful estimate comes from how much storage your own recording mode uses per day, followed by a check of the oldest footage you can actually replay.
This matters if you visit a property only at weekends or may not notice an event immediately. Choose a retrieval interval first, then test whether the camera's storage routine can support it. Increasing card capacity is not always an option: stay within the exact model's supported specification.
Define what “a day of footage” means
A day containing a few event clips is different from a day containing video throughout. Even a timeline spanning 24 hours does not establish that every moment was recorded at the same frame rate. A simple planning calculation is:
Approximate days = storage available for recordings ÷ typical storage used per day.
Use the same units on both sides. Do not substitute the number printed on the card for a verified usable figure without allowing for formatting and the camera's storage management. If the app reports remaining rather than used space, record that consistently. Once overwriting starts, a nearly full card no longer reveals the day's consumption just by comparing two free-space readings.

The 100GB figure is an example budget, not a statement that a particular 128GB card leaves exactly 100GB usable. These rows show why the daily recording load matters. They are not advertised retention promises for Q70 or any other model.
A three-day worksheet for your installation
- Save anything important first. Do not format a card just to run this exercise if it contains footage you need.
- Record the setup. Note the model, recognized card capacity, recording mode, quality settings and which views are being saved.
- Observe one quiet day and busier days. At the same time each day, note the storage figures the camera provides and any setting changes. Keep the mode unchanged during the comparison.
- Use the busiest representative day for cautious planning. A quiet trial should not become your promised retention at a busy entrance.
- Verify playback later. After normal use, find the oldest available recording and open clips across the interval you need. A timeline marker alone is not sufficient.
If the app does not expose reliable daily storage usage, skip the calculated figure and track the oldest playable recording over time instead. Do not invent a bitrate from the resolution label. Keep local storage, cloud storage and mobile data separate
Local card capacity concerns recordings on that card. Cloud retention depends on the selected service and plan. Mobile data pays for the supported cellular connection and functions that use it; a larger data allowance does not enlarge the card.

Set a retrieval routine that survives a busy week
If you need seven days of accessible footage, do not treat a single observed seven-day span as comfortable spare capacity. Busier scenes or changed recording settings may shorten it. Copy important clips promptly and review the retention again after changing mode, adding activity to the scene or replacing the card.
If retention is too short, first confirm the card is recognized correctly and the saved mode matches your needs. Consider a supported larger card or a different recording/storage arrangement, but do not reduce detail or event coverage without checking the consequence in a saved clip.
