Security Camera Night Vision: Fix Glare, White Haze and Blur

Your camera looks clear in daylight, but after dark the picture turns milky, a wall becomes a bright white patch, or a walking person smears across the frame. These symptoms can have different causes. Buying a higher-resolution camera or turning every setting to maximum is not the first useful step.

Start by saving a short original clip. Note whether the problem affects the entire scene, one bright area or only moving subjects. Then use the checks below, changing one thing at a time.

Match the symptom to a first check

A white haze appears only in IR night mode Infrared light reflecting from glass, a nearby surface, moisture or dirt. Inspect the lens area and nearby objects, including objects just outside the picture.
A close wall is very bright; the path is dark The nearby surface is reflecting much more light than the distant area. Try a viewing angle that reduces the close wall in the illuminated area.
The scene is sharp when still, but a person blurs Motion during the exposure, especially in low light. Repeat the walk with suitable additional light, where practical.
Live view is blocky but the exported clip is clearer Preview quality or transmission limitations. Compare the original saved file before judging the camera optics.

Axis documents how nearby reflections, droplets and dirt can degrade night images. Its device-specific menus do not apply to every camera, but the distinction between a reflection problem and a recording-quality problem is useful here.

1. Check for glass and close reflective surfaces

A camera looking through a window may look acceptable in daylight and reflect its own infrared illumination back at night. Curtains, glossy paint, window frames or a nearby roof overhang can also complicate the scene.

Try a temporary angle or position with fewer close surfaces, keeping the camera safely supported. Do not move an indoor camera into rain just to avoid glass. If outdoor placement is needed, select a model and installation suitable for those conditions.

If the app offers a way to disable IR illumination, a brief comparison with suitable external lighting can help isolate a reflection. Restore a working night setup after the test. A black image with IR disabled in total darkness is not evidence that the sensor has failed.

2. Inspect the optical surface without opening the camera

Look for removable shipping film, fingerprints, dust, water droplets or a web across the front. Follow the model's cleaning instructions and use materials suitable for its optical surface. Do not apply coatings, solvents or abrasive cleaners as an experiment.

Save a clip before and after the external inspection. If haze appears to be inside the camera or returns despite a clean, dry exterior, document it and contact support. Opening a sealed housing is not a useful first troubleshooting step.

3. Compare IR and colour modes for the same task

The UCOCARE Q70 offers infrared black-and-white and colour night viewing. Compare them using the same position and subject route. Check the recorded face or object you need to see, rather than choosing whichever preview looks brighter overall.

Colour information can help distinguish clothing or objects when there is enough suitable visible light. Infrared viewing can be useful in darkness, but the resulting black-and-white image does not preserve ordinary colour identification. Neither option proves a readable face at every distance.

On the Q70's two views, check each lens separately. A clear wide view does not prove that the other view is clear, and a close obstruction may affect one more than the other. Product feature illustrations show the intended modes; they are not recordings from your property.

4. Test a moving person, not only an empty yard

Ask a consenting person to pause at the important point, then walk through normally. Compare the paused frame with the moving sequence. When only movement looks blurred, the issue may involve exposure and available light rather than dirt or basic focus.

A brighter still image is not always a more useful moving image. If practical, improve lighting at the entrance or reduce the subject distance. Avoid shining a lamp directly into the lens or creating a bright foreground that leaves the person in darkness.

5. Keep a small evidence set for support

  • The model name and whether the issue affects one or all views.
  • A daylight clip and a night clip from the same position.
  • The selected night mode and whether the original file matches the live preview.
  • A photograph showing nearby walls, glass or overhangs, without exposing private information.
  • The single changes already tried and what improved or worsened.
